If you're just testing a layout for basic key positions and you're not doing complicated chords, you can probably get away with not having diodes in your matrix. Since bending the diodes is one of the most time-consuming assembly steps, and you're liable to run out of them, it would be nice to have a version of the sockets that omits the diodes. This should be doable if the column wire runs under the bottom switch pin, passing through "vias" in the PCB to avoid collisions with the row wires.
