http://bettermeans.com shows application error for long time, i would suggesting putting up a static page with explanation of current situation and invitation to support further maintenance and development including joining codding on github...

@mockdeep you could also link to http://help.bettermeans.com/ or even use that repo and just change its homepage to something with more information about current state of project...

Thanks, yeah, I'll take a closer look this week and see if I can't get things up and running again. Looks like there might be an outdated gem related to Exceptional, as well as something around AWS keys no longer being valid.

great that you may fix it! still i would see use for some simple static page if situations like that occur again... a'la twitter's whale ;) http://www.whatisfailwhale.info/ cheers!

I probably won't get a chance to work on anything like that in the near future. Feel free to put in a pull request, though, if you come up with something.

I'm interested in using bettermeans for a french university project. I need to translate the youtube bettermeans videos into french language. Do you know where to find the source files of those video please?

This should really be a new thread, but anyway...

I don't know if/ where you can get the source files from, but you could
just download the files from youtube using e.g. http://keepvid.com/ and
then edit those.

And/ or just add subtitles using e.g. http://www.amara.org/

Good luck!

Josef.

FYI - User registration on bettermeans.com seems to be down again.

Has Bettermeans completely shut down or is the user registration problem being fixed?

It appears to be sitting on a server but with registration and some usability issues. I think it really is in a holding pattern. I'm guessing the original people who made it have left and perhaps one of them is just keeping it up on some cheap server and paying to keep the domains and that's it.

The reimbursement system is genius but IMHO perhaps they tried to do too much? I wonder if it could be broken down into pieces and ported into modules for Drupal, where there is an existing user base for community based websites and a large number of developers.

No I think it needs to stay away from frameworks like Drupal. The problem is simply that it has been orphaned with no real maintainer, aside from @mockdeep. Its sad because its a really cool framework, but I think its just missing a bit too much meat for anyone to really use it in production?

Would you care to expand on what do you mean by "a bit to much meat" and why you think it should stay independent of other frameworks?

Sure. This project has so many cool and unique features but its missing quite a few other core integrations - Namely git/svn commit integration. But you really need to take a look at other competing applications to see: Assembla, etc.

My reasoning behind wanting to to stay away from other frameworks is mainly due to just not wanting to see it locked down into requiring other frameworks to use. It is really quite nicely made and I don't wish to see it swallowed into some other large kitchen sink framework.

That said, the first problem probably could be solved by implementing the second problem. But I'd rather see decoupled integrations if possible. Eg a set of modules that implement communication between other frameworks rather then wholesale integration of BetterMeans into something else.

I've actually forked the project and do a little work on it when I get a chance: https://github.com/mockdeep/better

It needs a lot of work just in terms of code cleanup. Unfortunately, I won't have much time to work on it in the foreseeable future as I'm pretty heavily focused on paying work for the moment. If anybody wants to dip their toes in I'd love to discuss strategy for getting it in a usable state.

As I understand it bettermeans itself is a fork of redmine. I wonder why
they didn't just make a bunch of modules for Redmine to add the
functionality into that. Was it a quick hack? Or was there good reason to
not do it as part of Redmine? I may email Sheeref Bishay and ask him about
this decision....
