I love the control this addon gives but i really do wish there was an ability to show all at the start of combat as towns can get real cluttered.
ive got the arena/bg/dungeon toggle on and its a great compromise, but its lacking for world pvp and pve

I believe Blizzard has actually added this as a setting somehow. If you make a new account the old default keybind to show/hide friendly nameplates will now toggle them on/off for combat only instead. I have not looked into this yet I'm just aware it exists. So you might be able to look into it yourself.

Otherwise I think Leatrix Plus offers this feature. I might also add it if I find time. If you look into the default Blizzard setting and figure out what it is and report back I'll add it in no time if you bring me the info :)

I'll leave this open as a reminder for now.

Oh wow yeah they did!
its pretty obscure, you have to disable always show nameplates, enable enemy and friendly nameplates, and bind show all nameplates to a key bind to check that the message at the top says "All Nameplates Turned On (Combat)" im gonna keep it bound so i can peek at non combat players since it only shows when the specific unit is in combat.

But yeah thank you for mentioning that!
I would have just ran around with always show nameplates enabled being none the wiser

That does sound a bit convoluted. Makes me think I should look into it and make a setting for it myself. I’m not sure when I’ll find the time though.
