It might be a negligence that ${REPO_ROOT}.version file is empty.

And it'll help to introspection if one can get version at runtime too.
Consider following PEP 396
E.g.,

import redis_property as rpt

rpt.__version__

Lots of tools aiming reduce tedious hand works during release when you need to keep VERSION synced.

E.g.,
setuptools_scm
