Create ASCII shortcut

I was thinking, you can probably gain a bit performance by skipping this whole step of remapping byte-indices to unicode-indices when the string is ASCII, because ASCII strings only use one byte per char, so the index remains the same.
Would it be worth it to add such a shortcut?
