Henry opens the meeting at 1600 (GMT)

AI and sustainability priorities for GSF working group.
Thomas initiated a discussion on AI and sustainability. The WG was tasked with taking a closer look at the problem and developing a plan to move forward, with open questions and next steps to be discussed in future meetings. Thomas seeks feedback on prioritising three tenets for a proposal on AI and sustainability: position summary, response to the senator's inquiry, and technical credibility for AI use cases. Thomas discusses the scope and the proposal and wants to focus on the most important priorities to address stakeholders' 80% needs.

AI content strategy for a tech nonprofit.
Henry suggests prioritising "specific AI use cases" due to the shift towards generative AI, while Navveen recommends "Gen AI" for now. Navveen proposes creating a blog to present the foundation's plans and work, while Thomas suggests focusing on practical content for "green software practitioners." Sean provides an update on the AI content project, including submitting a compiled blog post for review. Navveen suggests creating a reference application for CI/AI projects to make it easier for developers to understand and implement these technologies. Pindy supports the idea of a reference application and notes that customers often go through a similar learning process, starting with basic terminology and moving on to more specific needs.

AI sustainability and maturity models
Pindy suggests a maturity matrix to help customers understand their progress in adopting AI, from discovery to scaling. Tim proposes considering the producers' and consumers' perspectives on what constitutes "green" AI, as their carbon footprints may differ significantly. Henry and Tim discuss the intersection of AI and sustainability, focusing on how software practitioners can contribute to reducing carbon emissions through their work. Thomas emphasises the importance of technical details and conversations around AI use cases, particularly in the context of large language models like GSF.

Open-source project management principles.
Sean suggests using GitHub to collaborate on the project, keeping the working group informed through a shared channel.
Thomas and Sean discuss the best approach for involving others in the project, including creating a separate distribution list for decoupled projects. Thomas suggests establishing design principles, such as a user-oriented approach and practicality, to guide the project. Henry adds that design principles can help avoid scope creep and ensure the project aligns with the organisation's culture.

AI development and green initiatives.
The group discusses different LLM developments. Thomas prioritises addressing scope points in order of importance while considering concurrent execution of tasks. Sean suggests accelerating the timeline by bringing the idea to the steering committee and expanding on it. Sean proposes creating a first formal document on the idea for February 15, with the steering committee meeting the same day. Working group members discuss the need for tooling and gap analysis for AI measurement.
