I noticed that some of the examples have a Makefile that symlinks to a Makefile in the top-level directory. I have just tried to build one on MO desktop and get errors. I think there are some fixes needed for the FCFLAGS on line 29 (the NETCDF_INCDIR is missing the -I) and also for the LDFLAGS on line 34 (the NETCDF_LIBDIR is missing the -L)

@mo-marqh @harry-shepherd @TeranIvy just flagging this for your info. I have assigned it to myself and will investigate further

I realised I had an old copy of the demo repo so I have checked out a new one and this doesn't seem to be an issue when using the desktopEnv script provided in this repo (although I think that -L and -I should be specified for all include and linbk paths!). I have a custom desktopEnv script for testing the new developments in NG-ARCH and that seems to be where the problem is coming from so I will have a deeper look
