Copy/paste from Report a Problem no. 2929: 'Check for full text' links in ProQuest incorrectly directing to ILL in SOS

For the visual amongst us: https://www.screencast.com/t/KWO25zVIN

For the readers:

  • Use SOS to locate a dissertation that we have access to

  • Follow the view online link to go to item in ProQuest. Then:

  • If you choose 'download PDF' all is copacetic. The dissertation PDF downloads and off you go.

  • But If you choose 'abstract/details' then >> 'NU library links / check for full text', you are directed back to the record in SOS, which shows 'check availability' for item status and the ILL prompt.

I haven't done exhaustive testing, but this pattern was consistent for the five or so dissertations that I tried.

Ryan's response:

Unfortunately, the ProQuest dissertation records in SOS exist only in the Primo Central Index with direct URL links to ProQuest, so the temporary SOS records created when linking out from ProQuest or other databases won’t connect with them the way they can with journals or book chapters which have Alma portfolios for the link resolver to find.

If the button is causing confusion, we could remove that ‘Full text options’ box entirely but this would also cut the user off from ILL options in SOS, which I believe is the main reason they would use that option. We could also tweak the ‘Check for full text’ wording if it would be helpful.

Question for READ:

What is the most desirable behavior here?

Another possibility could be to replace the 'Check for Full Text' link directly with a link to ILLiad or WorldCat.
