How to use a 'wait' state

Hi, we are currently implementing a workflow which needs to spawn a number of child workflows and wait for each of them to finish before continuing.

Our plan is to:

1. Parent: spawn the children
2. Parent: enter a wait state and do nothing
3. Child: when done, call wakeUpParentWorkflow()
4. Parent: wake up and check if all children are finished and proceed to the next state, if not wait again.

But we are having some problems understanding the wait state. When transitioned to that state, it immediately executes, while we expect it to wait until awakened. So I guess our assumptions are incorrect here.
