How to implement a licensing check?

I need to implement a licensing check, but need ideas on how to redirect the user to the licensing page when the license expires or if a license is not installed.

I'm thinking of using something similar to the Setup module, but would need more info on how it works,

            routes.MapAreaControllerRoute(
                name: "Setup",

                defaults: new { controller = "Setup", action = "Index" }
            );
        }

After setup, how is this mapping removed?

I'm using this middleware atm, and it seems to work, but would appreciate any input or edge cases I may have missed, thanks:

I saw it and it seems to be per feature, I'm not sure if the code is open source too.
