Use "outline" instead of "border"

Can you use outline instead of border in CSS?
If you use outline it doesn't break the layout.

Thanks @gerdemann. You are right, but this raises other issues.
e.g

• overlapping of outlines of nearby containers)
• Outlines out of the window on 100% width containers.

Not sure if this is a benefit at all. Was more thinking about a "switch" on the FE to enable/disable the borders.
