Hi...
While using "Marauders Map" ...

Ubuntu Linux 14.04
Chromium Version 41.0.2272.76 OR Chrome Version 43.0.2357.81 (64-bit)

...map terrain is not shown.
I could see my contact avatars, but the map background is just "grey".

Regards

This is something that I guess has to be fixed so that the average user can still use it, maybe with open streetmap? google maps?

No plans to fix it because either way will require me to use a map api and
pay for people to use it which I, as a student, can't afford. If you want
to submit a pull request with your api key for mapbox I will definitely
accept it.

just as curiosity, testing on Windows 7 and Chrome 43.0.2357.81 and not even showing the map.
already added my own Mapbox Public Key to the content.js file, and added the extension from source but seems not working yet.
Have Ghostery installed, but it's off for this test.

I developed this on Windows 7 chrome so I can't tell you what the issues is
definitely.

The css is a little hacked together but I've found screen size to be an
issue so try zooming out. Also for now mapbox is being awesome and covering
the api requests due to the educational nature of the app.

I'm pretty sure people who doesn't see the map just doesn't follow README instrucions. I got the map working but I can find only myself, no other friends. What's the issue?

followed readme, updated content.js. Have tried using both source from github as well as from the chrome store and updating content.js, followed readme - still no map. can see icons on it but thats it.

It Works just fine with me. First follow the readem and creat a mapox account then click on a new project then save it . Copy well the map id and the access token( you can find it the share link), make sure you copied all the letters . Then go to google chrome, if you install it from google chrome extensions delete it... it's better to dowload the zip code ,then change the 2 variables.
In google chrome extention, check the develepor mode, then click on load unpacked extensions, then choose the root file where you download the file ) in the end click okay to load the file.
And thats it, it work just fine :)

Also getting the grey background with no map issue. On Ubuntu 14.04 in Chrome 42.0.2311.135 the console gives this error:

https://a.tiles.mapbox.com/v4/arankhanna.m3ankjj3.json?access_token=pk.eyJ1…YWYxOTcwYTI4ZTNhNDA5NTdlMzFjMDQ0NWM3OThjMSJ9.j6OVr_W3jAAdxusZ5qLXlg&secure Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 401 (Unauthorized)

Why does the url above contain your mapbox api token, even after I change content.js?

If you have Ghostery installed then you have to deactivate ghostery in the extension settings. Just turning Ghostery off is not enough. Then the map will be shown. Although, I don't yet get my friends mapped on the card.
