to me, or am I missing something? Is it still true that data will be deleted when the repository is written to in non-append-only mode, or only when borg compact is run in non-append-only mode?

Guess the text in 296+ was written before borg 1.2 went away from implicit auto-compaction.

Can you practically try it and submit a PR to fix the docs?

I am not sure when I will get around to test this, I was hoping someone might know this by heart. But I'll let you know when I was able to test this :)
