Is it possible to add a citation under an example? So far I've used linguex in Latex and Markdown but your approach is nicer and simpler!
In Linguex I used \phantom{} \hfill \citep[pp]{citekey} to archive it but I'm not sure if its possible with pandoc-ling.

The intended way to add references is in the "preamble" line on top. I know there is tradition of using right-aligned citations in the translation line, but I am not sure whether to add this as an option. Currently I do not plan to do so.

The main reason against adding this option is a general problem with HTML-based display of interlinear glossing. The problem occurs with long examples. Because HTML has to be adaptive to different screen sizes and zooming I want to have a display that adapts. This is problematic with line breaking. The current solution in pandoc-ling is that interlinear examples are always a single line, but they are scrollable: when they are very long you can simply scroll rightwards to read the whole example. With citations all the way to the right this would mean that they are hidden from view in such cases. Therefor I like the idea better to put citations in a header-like "preamble" line.

ok, I will consider putting the citation at the top inside the preamble. Thank you for your explanation!
