Hello,
As i am also having the same issue with esp8266 stops responding after some time,
your method is quite reasonable,but if you will explain us a proper guidance how to implement it or proper example then it would a very great help.

I surely can add a standalone example for PingAlive.
If there's something unclear in the readme.md, please tell me so I can update it.

Sorry for the delay.
I just added an example for which I'd be very interested to get feedback, here or in esp8266/Arduino#2330.
