Element already has a feature, found under Settings->Preferences->Timeline, allowing the user to toggle messages indicating that another user has changed their display name or avatar. However, changing this setting applies it to all rooms.
I would like an option to change whether those messages are displayed on a room-by-room basis. In the settings for a room, there should be an option "Show display name changes," "Hide display name changes," or "Follow account defaults." A similar option should be present for showing avatar changes and whether someone has joined or left the room.
Why would you like to do it?
If I am actively taking part in the discussion in a room, I want to know if the people I am talking to change their display names. This is especially important in a small room where I could expect to know everyone.
On the other hand, some rooms only exist for the admins to post announcements, and they do not allow most users to send messages at all. In an announcement room, I don't need to see hundreds of people that I'm not interacting with changing their display name: all the messages about display name changes just require me to do more scrolling to see the announcements that I'm actually there for.
