bot sometimes quits irc with a ping timeout, no log output, keeps running

Sometimes the bot stops working and I see only a ping timeout quit on irc e.g.:

VBAMGitter (~VBAMGitte@unaffiliated/caelum) has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)

in the stderr log of the bot process I only see the last message transmitted, the process does not exit.

I would prefer in this situation for the bot to at least terminate the process so that my cron job can restart it.
