When clicking on the configure button the default behaviour is to open the panel on the right side of the screen.
From a visual perspective it's easier to visualize the effect of a config change by scanning from left to right, I find the current positioning slightly unintuitive.
As an example vscode has the menu placement by default on the left side but it does allow flipping it.
