The following seems to do the job, but we might want to reimplement it in C++ ?

MySingularValueOfVar := function(name)
    SingularUnbind("HACK");
    Singular(Concatenation("proc HACK(){return(",name,");}"));
    return SI_CallProc("HACK", []);
end;;

Anyway, give it a good name, add it to the manual...
