There has been prior confusion of users assuming that ghcup only ships vanilla bindists and will never apply downstream patches.

This is not the case.

We may also consider providing a ghcup metadata that only provides vanilla.

For GHC, a large number of vanilla bindists are broken due this hadrian bug: https://gitlab.haskell.org/ghc/ghc/-/issues/19646

So it will be fun.
