OpenScad is slow and unstable for joining fin and base.
Try using BooleanOperationPolyDataFilter for joining.

How do I get Fcs fin tabs onto my finfoil.io model? I am having trouble

Currently this functionality is not yet automated.
It requires you to manually join the 3D files.
This issue is opened to track and discuss progress on this implementation.

I use OpenSCAD for this: http://www.openscad.org/
It's a great program but is has quite a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with programming or math.
