Digital scans of historic airborne and/or satellite photos have been used to successfully interpret past extents of glaciers and ice sheets over mountainous terrain (e.g. Kjeldsen et al., 2015; Kääb et al., 2018). The use of historic aerial photos allows modern researchers to look further into the past than is possible with contemporary satellite measurements alone. Large datasets containing many images require significant labor to accurately locate ground-control points in each image before further processing can be performed. A processing pipeline combining several modified algorithms from computer vision can automate image geo-location and ortho-rectification of otherwise poorly geolocated airborne images. Using an affine-, scale- and rotation-invariant image matching algorithm (Yu & Morel, 2011), distinct “keypoint” features are identified in historic airborne images and matched to similar keypoints found in modern WorldView imagery. A monte-carlo filtering algorithm selects a set of matching keypoints that maintain consistent image topology, allowing the automatic generation of geolocated ground control points without individual manual selection. Here we present preliminary results of this processing pipeline applied to the US Navy’s trimetrogon aerial photography campaign which collected more than 3,300 images over Antarctica during the 1930-50’s, in order to construct a glacial history of outlet glaciers covering much of West Antarctica’s peripheral regions. The algorithm is being developed as an open-source processing pipeline for public release to the research community, with initial results presented here.
