Maybe this will change in production, but currently on the staging site I can't look for buildings in much more than a single village without getting the "Timeout, try a smaller area" error. We often want to look at a significantly larger area.

This shouldn't be different between the staging and the production server.
The timeout comes from the overpass API, not from our server.
We need to use our own database with OSM data to overpass this issue.
