Was there any particular reason you forked off rather than contributing to KISS? I think both KISS and Zen have added valuable features and it would be great to have them integrated.

No particular reasons, forked off and started doing features that I (and my friend) wanted a launcher to have.

Keeping up with KISS has a point. Rebasing just involves quite a lot of work.

Well you could still consider opening PRs for the features you added and thus slowly but surely integrating back into KISS :)

There is a point in that also, then rebasing Zen would be easier in the long run.

Are you talking about favorite icons? They can be shown without labels and can be completely hidden. Check out Favorites settings / Show favorite item name and User Experience / Hide Favorites Bar.
