I think that it would be useful to start using github milestones for planning purposes. One thing we could do is add milestones for future planned releases. That would allow us to mark various issues as planned to be part of those milestones. That would help communicate to all of us which features and/or bugs are intended to be addressed in a particular release. It also helps improve transparency about why a release isn't out yet if we can see the open issues that are logged against that milestones.
