Define really cheap. The big cost drivers are the Mega microcontroller ($10ish), and the PCBs ($20-ish all combined? Or $30? I don't remember precisely), and the LCD/rotor display (aroudn $15?). If you don't want the mainboard to support anything else other than SNES at all, you may be able to reduce the cost of the PCBs just by not requiring the second PCB (the 6 or 7 system adapter). But you'd have to modify the design files to replace the socket on the mainboard, including room for the clock module that currently lives off the slot adapter board. That actually sounds pretty tedious. My guess is that by modifying everything only for the SNES... The total bill of materials for DIY-ing it might be between $60 and $100, probably closer to $70 or $80. |

You can build Version 1 which is SNES only. You can also build Version 2 or Version 3 and only solder the SNES slot. You will only need 2 switches as you can "bridge" CLK 1 and CLK 2. Finally you can built Version 4. It's kind of a lite version of the V5. Instead of having several cartridge ports, there's one place you can plug adapters with the slot you want to use. If you have enough space, you might even be able to solder directly the snes adapter instead of solder all these female pin headers. And they are all compatible with the last firmware. I have a V3 and I was able to build it for roughly 50€. With every slots. |
