I would like to make an important announcement regarding this issue.
ARM and I have been negotiating the use of SLEEF repository and
sponsorship. However, since ARM has not indicated its intention to
continue negotiations by the deadline, which was yesterday, I have
suspended their commit access as of today.
SLEEF project provides only the current and previous versions of
software free of charge. No other materials and services are provided
free of charge unless they are explicitly stated to be free of
charge. More specifically, software maintenance, i.e., fixing bugs,
adding functionalities, and responding to inquiries, is a service that
requires expertise and is basically a fee-based service, even though
it may be performed free of charge with good intentions. It is a huge
misconception to think that everything is provided free of charge in
open source projects.
I do not view ARM's use of the SLEEF repository as a contribution that
equally serves society as a whole. My claims to ARM are essentially
the same as the claims in the code of conduct below. I have repeatedly
explained this to ARM and invited them to discuss it. However, ARM has
never properly responded. ARM has always remained silent on the
subject.
It is impossible to have good community relations while running
away from important discussions. After all, they are sacrificing our
project for their benefit.
Until now, I have managed SLEEF project with the utmost consideration
for ARM's position and interests. I have always explained to ARM in
advance and confirmed their intentions before making important
decisions. Naturally, in doing so, it is sometimes necessary to engage
in discussion. I have clarified the basis for all of my arguments and
spent sufficient time to confirm ARM's intentions. However, ARM
refused to even discuss the issue, remained silent for a long period
of time, and ultimately walked away from the project. Do you think
this is an act of integrity for the project? Is this an act of
integrity to the entire FOSS ecosystem?
In the first place, ARM had been maintaining SLEEF as a business, not
as a service to society as a whole. And my support was necessary for
that purpose. Considering such circumstances, doesn't ARM deserve to
pay me some commission? Why must I continue to help them with their
business for free? If they were not willing to support the project as
a sponsor, why didn't they just say so earlier?
From now on, I will take full responsibility for the maintenance and
software development for SLEEF project. I am currently building
arrangements to handle this. I will make some kind of announcement
regarding this in the near future.
Note that this project is currently not being paid a cent. Do not
expect too much from a free service. Consider sponsoring the project
before complaining.
SLEEF project plans to adopt the following CoC. As a preparatory step,
we will first incorporate TLFloat library, which has already adopted
this CoC, into SLEEF as a submodule. If you have any comments or
objections to this CoC, please write them in the following page.
