Yu, Shiqi (Charlotte)

she/her

PhD Student specializing in HCI and XR

About ME

Shiqi is a first-year PhD student in Interdisciplinary Design and Media at Northeastern University. She is a researcher and developer passionate about Extended Reality (XR) and human-computer interaction, with a growing focus on healthcare applications. Shiqi’s research aims to advance XR technologies by designing innovative interfaces and systems that enhance human experiences and improve real-world outcomes. She explores the integration of virtual and augmented reality with emerging technologies like robotics and IoT, emphasizing their potential in healthcare and other impactful domains. Her work bridges the virtual and physical worlds, striving to develop intuitive, immersive, and meaningful solutions for users in both professional and personal contexts.

Research Interests:

  • XR Interaction & Interface Design: Development of novel, user-centered, and natural interaction techniques and interfaces for immersive XR experiences.
  • XR Systems & Development: Integration of XR technologies with IoT and robotics through robust system architectures and multi-modal designs, with a focus on healthcare systems.
  • XR Applications in Healthcare and Beyond: Implementation of XR solutions to address challenges in healthcare, scientific visualization, and education, enhancing user experiences and outcomes in these critical domains.

Before settling in Boston, Shiqi Yu spent wonderful three years in the UK, working as a Research Fellow at Cranfield University on XR research for the DEBUT WM project and as an XR Software Developer at the University of Greenwich, where she led the development of an XR security testbed. She holds an M.S. in Design Informatics from the University of Edinburgh, supervised by Dr. Benjamin Bach, with a thesis on 3D medical data visualization using HoloLens.
