GSoC 2025: Mentorship Availability for SymPy-SymEngine Integration #2088
Comments
I would love this. However, I'm just getting started on learning the intricacies of SymEngine and Sympy. So I'm not sure I could be a mentor. But would be more than happy to contribute. Can you give dates/times? And mentorship requirements? |
Hi, I think the better question to ask is whether SymPy maintainers are open to it. You should first ask from SymPy developers about what they want out of a sympy-symengine integration and if there's a mentor from SymPy who wants the project to happen, then I could help out with the SymEngine side. |
I reached out to the SymPy maintainers, and they confirmed that if SymEngine mentors are available, the project can be listed for GSoC on the SymEngine side. They suggested that SymEngine maintainers take the lead in listing and mentoring the project. Would SymEngine maintainers be open to this? If so, I’d be happy to refine the project scope with your suggestions to ensure it aligns with SymEngine’s goals. Additionally, I’d be glad to help facilitate collaboration between SymPy and SymEngine to support this effort. Looking forward to your thoughts! |
Yes, this is a great idea and better SymPy integration would be awesome. I can help mentor this as well. |
Thank you so much for your support! It’s truly exciting to have your mentorship for this project. I also appreciate the insights from @isuruf and other maintainers, as their input has been really helpful in understanding how to approach this integration. To ensure we move forward in alignment with both SymEngine and SymPy, I’d love to clarify a few things: 1. Project Scope: Given your experience with both SymPy and SymEngine, what aspects of their integration do you think would have the highest impact? Are there any specific challenges or areas that you think should be prioritized? 2. Next Steps: Since SymPy maintainers suggested that SymEngine should list and lead the project, should we draft an official GSoC idea on the SymEngine side, or would you prefer further discussion/refinement first? I’d be happy to put together a draft proposal incorporating your input, along with suggestions from other contributors. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! |
Hello SymEngine Maintainers,
I am interested in working on a GSoC 2025 project focused on improving the SymPy-SymEngine integration by expanding SymEngine’s role as a symbolic backend for more parts of SymPy. However, I recently noticed that the SymEngine-related ideas were removed from the SymPy GSoC ideas page due to a lack of available mentors.
Before deciding on my next steps, I wanted to reach out and ask:
I have already set up SymPy and SymEngine locally and have been exploring their integration. I am eager to contribute and would love to hear your thoughts on how best to proceed.
Looking forward to your feedback!
