Which Umbraco version are you using? (Please write the exact version, example: 10.1.0)

15.0.0

Bug summary

The navigation of the media picker needs some TLC. In the example below I have a Media Picker that allows only "Image" Media Types to be selected.

It takes quite some understanding of the underlying technology for the navigation to make sense.

  • I can't click the big folder icon because "Folder" is not allowed to be selected in this Content Picker Data Type. So I need to click on the text to navigate into the folder.
  • After clicking on the text, I want to select a Image - in that case I cannot click on the text (this would navigate into the Image), I need to click on the Image to select it.

umb-media-picker-issue

I think there are several things we can do to make this better:

  • Introduce some concept that categories a media item as a "container", this COULD be determined by looking at "Allowed child node types" on each Media Type. If a Media Type has any allowed child types, it's a container.
  • If a Media Item is not a "container" clicking on the text should not "navigate into" the media item - it should probably select it OR open it for editing (but I think it would be possible to find better ways for that navigation).
  • I do think that there should be a way to open a media item in a modal for editing right from the content picker.

Hi there @enkelmedia!

Firstly, a big thank you for raising this issue. Every piece of feedback we receive helps us to make Umbraco better.

We really appreciate your patience while we wait for our team to have a look at this but we wanted to let you know that we see this and share with you the plan for what comes next.

  • We'll assess whether this issue relates to something that has already been fixed in a later version of the release that it has been raised for.
  • If it's a bug, is it related to a release that we are actively supporting or is it related to a release that's in the end-of-life or security-only phase?
  • We'll replicate the issue to ensure that the problem is as described.
  • We'll decide whether the behavior is an issue or if the behavior is intended.

We wish we could work with everyone directly and assess your issue immediately but we're in the fortunate position of having lots of contributions to work with and only a few humans who are able to do it. We are making progress though and in the meantime, we will keep you in the loop and let you know when we have any questions.

Thanks, from your friendly Umbraco GitHub bot 🤖 🙂
