Describe the issue
Cannot start Windows 11 on ARM or Linux ARM after updating to MacOS 15.4 Beta (24E5206s)
Kernel panic when starting a VM on MacBook Pro M4 with MacOS 15.4
The issue seems to be specific to M4. On an M1 iMac, UTM does not crash with the same configuration.

Configuration

  • UTM Version: 4.6.4
  • macOS Version: 15.4 Beta (24E5206s)
  • Mac Chip: M4 Max

Crash log
No UTM crash log saved.

Debug log
Tried to create a crash log, but after enabling it, trying to start Windows, rebooting and again starting UTM to export the log, the export button is still greyed out.

The issue is not dependent on the VM. Trying to create a new VM (Windows 11 IoT ARM) caused kernel panic when starting the installation.

The same thing happens to me, with Vmware Fusion and with Parallels desktop. When I try to start Windows 11 or install it virtually, the Mac Mini restarts. The only solution I see is to format the Mac and use a USB to install version 15.3 and then restore it with Time Machine from a backup.

Same thing happens on my M2 Pro MacBook, installing Windows 11 on ARM occasionally causes the OS to crash and reboot, looks to be happening upon rebooting the VM

First of all, I am posting this message to warn of the total ignorance of Apple technicians. I contacted Apple technical service in Spain and told them what had happened to me and that I wanted to go back to version 15.3 but that I didn't dare in case there was a problem and the device wouldn't start again. They assured me that there wouldn't be any problem and that they would guide me step by step through the process to format the Mac Mini and return to the previous version. So I did and a technician connected to the iPad via camera could see everything I was doing and guided me step by step until the Mac Mini was erased. He assured me that everything was correct and that it would restart to reinstall the original version of Mac OS. Lie. The Mac has died, flashing the red light and that's it. Now I have to take it to an Apple Store to fix the mess they have caused me, because I told them over and over again that if there was any risk I wouldn't dare, but they, the technicians, assured me the opposite. Now Mac mini m4 pro is dead and waiting for Apple to fix it.

Apple macOS Sequoia 15.4 Beta 2 Release Notes:

"Virtual Machines
Known Issues
Upon update to macOS 15.4 beta 1, M4 Macs will be unable to launch virtual machines and attempts will result in a system restart. (145309647) (FB16542958)
Workaround: Do not launch virtual machines. If virtual machine applications launch upon login, boot to Safe Mode and disable in system settings."

But, now in Beta 2 my virtual machines works again :-)

Update. Well, after going to the Apple Store to have my Mac Mini M4 Pro repaired, after several attempts with two different laptops, it was not possible, so I had to leave it to be repaired. The guy who helped me, very kind and patient, by the way, told me that it was reckless of his colleague to guide me step by step to format the Mac without knowing the consequences. The repair, if it were the motherboard, is covered by the warranty, but the price is more than 600 euros without VAT. Now it's time to wait for it to be fixed. Greetings.
