I'm always frustrated when I need to manually scroll down the paper to the list of references, then to copy paste paper name into google, and finally I can understand what reference is cited.
Describe the solution you'd like
A popup when hovering over refererences like [1] which give a preview of the paper.
Link to that paper

It would not be too hard to bring that feature back and even include an "open on vanity" feature for arxiv papers.
One thing to be careful with would be: in order to favour publications over preprints, the deduplication algorithm will overwrite an arxiv reference with a venue reference and the "go to AV" functionality would break. A workaround would be to implement a safe-keeping of arxiv IDs in that case.
