Flashed, but menu not working correctly

So not sure if this helped but i matched my PID in x52.cpp and left the joystick plugged into the host shield while uploading the sketch, now i see the splash screen but that's all. no lcd backlight and no menus.
UPDATE 2: if i use the yaw axis, the menu starts jumping around randomly really fast, but cant use any buttons or set anything. @xythobuz
