Every now and then when taking screenshots, instead of taking the screenshot, a 🚫 will allow in the top left corner of the screen, followed by the error message “An error has occurred.” This seems to simply happen while the screenshot is saving, and waiting a few seconds will allow you to take a screenshot once again.
More rarely, however, this will persist: every now and then, pngshot will be put into an unrescuable state where attempting to take a screenshot will do nothing for several seconds, only to produce the same error as described above after a long while. No screenshot will be saved. I suspect, but cannot confirm, that this is also related to and possibly caused by trying to take too many screenshots in quick succession.
Recently, when this happened, my SD card was corrupted – apparently, some exFAT table entries had become malformed. I can't say for certain whether this was due to the errors pngshot was exhibiting, but I think it may be worth looking into!
