Zabbix Sender - sending integer values

I've noticed the Sender class converts the value field to a string. I've created a Zabbix trapper item to the host I want to send data to, does this limit the value to only be of the text type?
The following response:
{"processed": 3, "failed": 0, "total": 3, "time": "0.000076", "chunk": 1}

So it goes through, but when looking at the latest data, no data has arrived.
