workbench.action.splitEditorToRightGroup

In vscode, the splitEditorToRightGroup command allows you to split the current editor into the right editor group or create one if it doesn't exist. I'm not sure if it's possible to achieve this in Zed out of the box.

Let me know if any other details are needed! I'd also be happy to PR this into Zed if someone with experience would be around to provide guidance if the implementation is not straightforward.

ActivatePane is interesting. It does seem to open a new pane if no pane with the specified number is already open which is part of the puzzle I suppose, but it's far from what splitEditorToRightGroup does. I'll write out approx the logic of what I'm looking for:

if Some(pane) = [get pane to the right of the current pane]
  copy the focused editor into pane
else
  create pane to the right of the current pane
  copy the focused editor into the created pane

Not sure what the right terminology is for Zed, but that's approximately what I'm looking for.

I also noticed that Zed has goToXSplit functionality. I would love to have that also work for this feature - i.e. rather than always creating a new pane, reuse an existing pane to the right. My dream would be having this reuse existing pane logic be a global modifier to all of the *split* commands.

I think we indeed miss the "reuse an existing pane to the right" bit of all:

• "split into a panel or go there" is workspace::ActivatePane
• "always split to the right without reusing" is pane::SplitRight

It feels we can add a parameter into the latter, similar to how it's done to

zed/crates/workspace/src/pane.rs

and allow people to rebind whatever split behavior the want: reusing the panel or not.

Seems relatively simple to do: Zed should know how to look for a pane in a certain direction already, as there are actions to move items between panes.
