A session kills itself after restart

I was just wondering, is it normal for sessions to kill themselves after I detach and restart my machine? Its no biggie since I can resurrect them but, the issue is certain sessions are running with a set of environment variables I exported before I start my session so, something like this:

export PROJ='a'
export FOLDER='b'
zellij

When I resurrect the session, these variables (PROJ, FOLDER) are lost. Has anyone faced this issue before?
