ValheimAddicts HowTo Playing with mods
About us | Preparations | Download the mod-manager | Installation | Feedback and suggestions | Changelog |

ValheimAddicts is a small community who are passionate about Valheim. We are running different servers at different times like vanilla, beginner, creative, hardcore or total conversion setups. While doing so we are quite active in the Valheim modding and server operating communities.
First of all you need to have Valheim installed on your system. In this guide we assume you
are using the Steam version of the game.
To automate the mod handling we recommend to use the tool "r2modman". This is a lightweight and free
mod-manager from the thunderstore.io mod repository which supports a lot of different Unity-Games.
The advantage over nexus-mods is simply you don't need an account to download.
Personally I feel the modding community is more active on thunderstore.io than on nexus anyways.
Get the latest version of r2modman from this site https://github.com/ebkr/r2modmanPlus/releases
We recommend to download the "Setup" version of the mod-manager named like "r2modman-Setup-3.1.34.exe"
When you run the installer you will be asked if you want to install it only for you or for all users on your PC. The option to install it for all users is only available if you run the installer with administrator rights. But it is perfectly fine to install it only for you.
After that you will be promted to where to install the mod-manager. Installing it only for you comes up with with a path like "C:\Users<YOURUSERNAME>\AppData\Local\Programs\r2modman" This is perfectly ok since it is the common windows standard installation directory for user installed applications. Just remember the path for now to be able to create a shortcut to the application later for easier access in the future.
One more click on "Install" and the installation process is done.
When you start r2modman for the first time we recommend to stick the application to your
taskbar as quick shortcut for the future. You do that by right-clicking the icon of r2modman
on your taskbar and select "Pin to taskbar".
By this the icon of the application will stay on the taskbar even if you close the application. Clicking on that icon will then restart the mod-manager. Creating a desktop shortcut or a start-menu entry is also fine.
When you launch r2modman it usually presents itselft with the game selection screen.
Now sroll down and find the Valheim picture.
You can mark this game as favorite (by clicking the star symbol). By this within the game
selection screen the game will be placed in front of all other games.
Beside that you can also set this game as "default", so whenever you start r2modman in the
future, the mod manager will skip the game selection screen and get you right to the profile
selection.
When you select the game you have to tell r2modman if you are using the Steam or the XBox version of the game.
After choosing the game you end up in the Profile selection screen.
A profile is a collection of mods you want to use separately. If you are playing on
different servers it is a good idea to have one profile for each server, since usually
servers come with different mod requirements.
I would recommend to leave the "Default" profile clean of Mods, so you are able to easily
switch back to a vanilla, unmodded version of the game if needed.
From this point on you usally create a new profile ...
... and select it.
Finally the main page of the application shows up.
On the menu on the left you now have the option to...
- start the game modded
- start the game vanilla (unmodded)
- see and modify the list of mods already installed (obviously none yet in the screenshot)
- see a list of mods available online
- open a config editor for the config files of installed mods
- open the settings dialog of r2modman
Usually you would now browse the online mods and add what you like (or chose the mods the server you want to connect to requires) and after that "launch the game modded".
That's it. Well done.
The Bjorgyn server is meant to test and learn about the new Mistland changes. It is set up as "Casual/Easy/Beginner/QoL" server.
While configured with easy game difficulty we also added a lot of time sparing quality of life settings to not waste the time of our players. Sooner or later we will switch back to a more challenging setup again.
Once you followed the mod-manager setup, only a few more steps are needed to join our server.
- Go to the profile page of r2modman and create a new profile like "ValheimAddicts - Bjorgyn"
- Select that profile and search in the Online Mods for "Bjorgyn". There should be one mod named "ValheimAddicts_Bjorgyn_Server_ModPack by ValheimAddicts".
- Install that mod.
- Launch the game modded
- When in the start screen on the top right you should have the Fast-Link to the Bjorgyn server.
- Click on that link and you will get to the character selection screen. On first connect create a new character and use that to connect.
- Click start and off you go...
Done. :)
Enjoy the game
