Hello!

The ability to set default values for a field could be a helpful feature. May be useful for institutions that always use the same information for fields like Originator.

For instance, if the Originator field is always going to be populated with "XYZ," could we add the ability to have it auto populated with this value when opened if it does not already contain a value?

Thanks for considering!

I suggest that these options could go into the Core Metadata tab of the preferences UI. The current checklist could be a table of checkbox | metadata name | default value. The ui for the default value data entry would need to match that in the rest of the GUI (ie. date pickers, or coding history table).

@jsims-1, suggestions on behavior?

  • If description.default is set to x and you open a file with no metadata and one with description.default set to y, then what should happen?
  • Perhaps a function to Apply Defaults that could be used per column with an option to overwrite existing values or not? Same as to set to all columns?

@jsims-1, what say you? Or others? It seems like we can make this happen if we can nail down the best option for users
