Project Proposal

  • Basic idea: building SMS and web-enabled LED displays on bus stops which the public can activate, leave messages, and interact with. Turns the physical stop into an information node.
  • The LED display would be installed on the bus stop and would be used to display user-generated messages on the site. This can also be used to display adverts showing the use of the
SMS service.
  • This allows us to have two effective means of inviting potential users.
  • I suggest we make about 15 such displays and install them on stops in a particular area for a period of 10 days.
  • This would be adequate time for the novelty factor to reach its full impact and we would then target another area, thus taking the installation around the city.
  • Doing it this way ensures we have time to install them and change power supplies and we would have manpower to handle the devices.
  • Plus it would be good fun if we did it wearing chaloBest T-shirts and logos.
  • This campaign would generate, I suppose, a tangible figure of at least a 100 new users per day in an area? Maybe more..

Technical Details

  • Each device would be fitted with a GSM module and a micro-controller, so the communication between the server and the devices would happen on the SMS infrastructure we already have.
  • This would result in the least amount of hassle to set up/move and re-install these devices.
  • These work on relatively low power and can be sustained well. The LED displays will however take a lot of energy comparatively and the power setup needs to be determined for them based on the duration of the installation.

Workflow of Project

Requirements

  • GSM modules (2 nos.)
  • Development Boards (already have a board, need one more and some shields),
  • LED Display Unit

Development

Proof of concept/Prototype

  • Roughly 10 workdays
  • Research and sourcing materials
  • Schematic Design

Assembly

Coding

Prototype Refinement

  • Redesign based on new constraints/feedback
  • Recoding new features
  • Code optimization

Final Prototype

  • Production of 15 display devices in roughly 10 man days.
  • Assembling (5 days) + Testing (5 days)
  • This feature can be developed independently/in parallel to the website and API.
  • Would be operable on either an external power source or internal(in case we do not get ready access to external sources).
