Today I spun up a pair of A100 80GB gpus for $3.25 / hour using the
[prime-intellect-cli](https://github.com/PrimeIntellect-ai/prime-cli).
I wrote about
[prime intellect]({% post_url 2025-01-06-prime-intellect-intro %})
earlier and had spun up some GPUs using their website before, but their CLI is nice.

First I checked that I had public and private ssh keys from them.
These can be downloaded from the [profile page](https://app.primeintellect.ai/dashboard/profile).
I saved my keys in my `.ssh` directory, named them `prime-int-1-pub.pem` (public) and `prime-int-1.pem` (private), and gave them both the correct permissions,

chmod 400 ~/.ssh/prime-int-1.pem
```

I also created and saved a prime-intellect API key from [here](https://app.primeintellect.ai/dashboard/tokens).
Next I created a quick uv application, added the prime-cli depedency, and activated the environment with,

uv init prime-cli
cd prime-cli
uv add prime-cli
source .venv/bin/activate
```

To configure the prime-cli I did,

```bash
prime config set-api-key --api-key <prime-api-key>
prime config set-ssh-key-path --path ~/.ssh/prime-int-1.pem
```

Next I listed the available pods using,

```bash
prime availability list --gpu-type A100_80GB --gpu-count 2
```

I then requested that a pod be created using an `ID` from the previous command,

```bash
prime pods create --id 07bfe3 --image cuda_12_4_pytorch_2_5
```

If an image is not specified, the CLI will offer you a list of choices.
When I ran the command the possible choices were,

You can also setup custom images and templates but I haven't figured that out yet.

Before the pod is created, the CLI will give you more details and ask if you want to proceed,

If you agree, then it will return a pod_id that you can use in command like,

Once the pod Status is Active you can use the CLI to ssh in,

prime pods ssh <pod_id>
```

Once you are done using the pod you can terminate it with,

```bash
prime pods terminate <pod_id>
```

At the time of writing the cost per hour for (non spot) H100_80GB GPUs ranged from
$1.90 for 1 to
$17.94 for 8 to
$652.80 for a cluster with 256.
