following from feedback from Leslie Lyons please find below her suggested definition of random-bred (cats)- which would be only suitable for cats and may therefore require some changes to make it a suitable definition for an across species term or could be used just for cats. 'Feral' or 'random-bred' populations do occur in other species (e.g. feral goats, 'village dogs' so a cross species definition may be desirable.
Could you please review and create a 'random-bred' entry to replace the current 'mixed breed' for cats?
Leslie Lyons definition:
“Random-bred cats represent an intermediate step in cat domestication, between wildcats and highly selected cat breeds. They are common in both rural and urban environments and are represented by generally feral street, barn, alley, house, community cats, moggies and various other names that imply their mating is uncontrolled and natural selection processes of the local environment influence the population structure. The temperament can range between a fractious feral cat to an amiable house-hold pet and they have become an important species of the local ecosystem. Random-bred cats can be genetically differentiated worldwide as populations (races) due to isolation by distance, thus random-bred cats are often described as a Japanese domestic shorthair, European domestic shorthair, or American domestic shorthair. Specific cat breeds have developed from the different cat racial populations.
