new tip of 'develop' was merged into gwyneth -then i created a new branch for it and this PR summarizes the changes.
Merge conflicts resolved, but due to lots of changes (of old rbuilder-develop used as base) versus the current tip of rbuilder, there are currently lots of compile issues.
