Things to look forward to in the future of Macaulay2:

  • Have funding and something resembling a plan for a workshop next summer (2013), though we are looking for a small group of people to organize said workshop. The funding is already secured.
  • The following summer (2014) there are people preparing funding submissions. If you are interested and would like to help, please get in contact with Frank Moore or Zach Teitler.
  • Work is being done to generally improve Numerical Algebraic Geometry, Primary Decomposition, Grobner Bases over fields more general than the usual ones, and general speedups.

A list of things that participants would like to see in the Macaulay2 program or Macaulay2 community:

  • (Mike) Making more people capable of making changes, improvements, or additions to the engine code and/or the interpreter.
  • (Gwyn) Small Macaulay2 session at the JMMs in January (to parallel the Sage group's meetings).
  • (Sonja) As more and more packages exist and work is potentially duplicated, packages should be grouped by their area so that new packages (before installing) should announce their classification. This may cause package writers to be more aware of work that has previously been completed. Ideas include: Beginners, Commutative Algebra, Computer Algebra, Homological Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Combinatorics, Representation Theory, Algebraic Statistics, Deformation Theory, Number Theory, Interfaces
  • (Luke) Dependency Tree Visualization (created with Posets package?)
  • (Adam) Compile the "5 things I wish I knew" lists into a large wiki page linked from the Main Page. More generally, have the wiki contain more aggregate information.
  • (David S.) It would be nice to make Mathjax available in documentation. How difficult would this be?
  • (David S.) Is there any interest in logo/t-shirts and branding for Macaulay2?
  • (Emily) Making a faster implementation of exponentiation in characteristic p
  • (Anton) Advertise and use the bug tracker. link (The location of the bug tracker is subject to change)
  • (Andrew C.) "How to use the Macaulay2 interpreter" workshop.
